  • Cambodian Cultural After-School Program | CMAA Lowell

Cambodian Cultural After-School Program The CMAA Cambodian Cultural After School Program (CCASP) offers programming based on Cambodian culture to youth aged 7 through 16. Registration for CCASP is currently OPEN! The Cambodian Cultural After School Program runs from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM during September through June in accordance with the Lowell Public School school year. The after school program offers the following classes to our students. Khmer Language Classes Khmer language lessons are offered to students so that they can learn how to read, write, and speak the language. Youth of any proficiency level are welcome to participate. These lessons not only help youth communicate better with their parents and grandparents but also teach them to be proud to know their family’s mother tongue. Traditional Instruments CCASP youth are provided with the opportunity to learn about the various traditional instruments used in traditional Cambodian music. Youth are allowed to learn whichever instrument interests them and are encouraged to learn more than one if they would like! Folk Songs Various age appropriate folk songs are taught to youth to allow them to practice their Khmer language skills and develop a love of Cambodian music. Staple folk songs that youth will learn include Sarika Keo Euy (សារិកាកែវអឺយ) and Arapiya (អារ៉ាប់ពីយ៉ា). It does not matter if you can sing well or not – we encourage everyone to sing along and have fun! Traditional Cambodian Dance During the after school program, traditional Cambodian dance lessons are offered so that youth can learn popular dances such as Bopha Lokei (របាំបុប្ផាលោកីយ៍) and the Coconut Dance (របាំគោះត្រឡោក). The dance lessons also focus on practicing flexibility, structure, and discipline in addition to learning the dances. Cost The CCASP costs $275 for the whole year.
